You will leave Stoked Backpackers at around 08:15 and take a scenic 20 minute train journey along the False Bay coastline to Simonstown. You will be provided with a fully paid rail pass to cover all your journeys between Muizenberg and Simonstown.
Pisces Divers is conveniently located next to Simonstown train station.
The Pisces Divers team will run you through the programme and get you started at around 09:00.
The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three main phases and is designed to run over 4 days. If the weather and sea conditions are favourable you will complete the course on Friday:
You will learn to use basic scuba gear including a dive computer, and standard accessories. PADI’s Open Water Diver materials cover what you need to know about basic scuba diving skills, terminology and safety procedures. For each concept you’ll read a description and watch a video demonstration. Then you’ll jump in the pool (or pool-like environment) to practice these skills with your instructor. Later, as a certified diver, use the course materials as a reference guide for future diving adventures and to review what you learned.
Make sure you eat breakfast before you leave your accommodation each day, and prepare a packed lunch to take with you. Pisces Divers have a cafe on site with light snacks and drinks, and you will also find some shops selling sandwiches, rolls and pies close by.
Saturday & Sunday are reserved for catching up on days missed due to bad weather.
Being so close to the sea, Pisces Divers can offer dives daily. There are a huge variety of dive sites within close range, from shallow shore entries with kelp forests to deeper wreck and reef dives. Their boat launches several times a week, so we strongly recommend adding some extra time to your stay in Cape Town if you are keen to start filling your new diving logbook with interesting dives.
Many divers are drawn to Cape Town to see Seven Gill Cowsharks - these can be reliably seen year-round, as well as several other pelagic and reef shark species. Snorkelling and scuba diving with Cape Fur Seals is another hugely popular choice.
Pisces Divers offer all levels of PADI dive training from beginner to instructor level, as well as diving equipment rental and sales, a servicing workshop for all major brands, and an airfill and nitrox service.
Stoked Backpackers is literally a stone’s throw away from Surfers’ Corner in Muizenberg, Cape Town. This popular swimming beach is a blue flag beach, which means it gets top marks for safety, cleanliness and amenities.
The beach break produces great waves, making it a hot spot for surfers. In fact, Muizenberg is one of the World’s Best Surf Towns, according to National Geographic, who say, “A great surf town is the nearly magical sum of consistent waves, inviting accommodation, friendly locals, delicious food, and plenty of activities should the ocean go flat.”
Stoked Backpackers is newly renovated with spacious rooms which are all en-suite. Their communal room has an unbeatable view for watching the lines roll in, or the sunrise (if you’re up for it). They have an awesome vegetarian cafe where you can get a great cup of coffee, tasty bites and hang out with other travelers and locals. There is also free Wi-Fi and an internet station for you to stay in touch.
In your free time you can visit their activity centre for lots of ideas for things to do. On the water, there’s surfing and stand-up paddling. If you don’t know how to do these, this is the perfect place to learn. There are also boat tours that take you whale watching. For under the water, there is cage diving with great white sharks or free diving with much friendlier ones.
Of course, there’s lots to do on land: it’s the perfect place to start your peninsula tour, explore the Cape Winelands or climb, walk or hike our unique fynbos-covered mountains.
Muizenberg Railway Station is just round the corner giving you cheap access to Cape Town, Kalk Bay, & Simonstown. Close by you will find a chilled selection of cafes and restaurants, local shops, Gary’s Surf School and of course the beach with its colourful beach huts and great surfing vibe.
While you’re at Stoked you can enjoy all of the facilities below:
There is no laundry service at Stoked for personal items, but there is a laundry shop on the beach just along from Gary’s Surf School that will wash, dry & fold your clothes for a reasonable fee.
Please let us know if you would like to upgrade to a smaller dormitory room or a twin/double room if you are travelling together as friends or a couple.
Pisces Divers is located in Simonstown in False Bay, not far from Cape Town.
We have arrival dates for this course every Monday throughout the year.
It’s easy to add extra nights to your stay, so if you find a cheaper flight that arrives earlier than your Monday arrival date just let us know. You can also add extra nights after your course for the same reason.
If you want to add a volunteer project, a Surfing Course, or even a longer tour, we can help you with that too. If you're interested in adding further PADI courses please let us know and we'll be happy to arrange an extended programme for you to include Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, Divemaster and many more. Please ask one of our friendly team at any time before you arrive in Cape Town.
